ABOUT

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) is the first national university in Georgia and the first higher education institution in the South Caucasus region.It established formal education in the country, created the local intellectual workforce and paved the way for human development and democracy. TSU was founded on February 08, 1918 as a comprehensive European-style higher education institution. Majority of its 12 founders had received higher education in the European countries and brought their knowledge, experience and contacts to TSU and based Georgian higher education system on truly Western values. Although the University has a century-long history, it has inherited traditions from previously existing scholastic centers in the country. Nowadays, there are 7 faculties at TSU with over 215 accredited academic programs in various disciplines – Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law,Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, Faculty of Mmedicine, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences.
 

For all students the university puts emphasis on:

  • In-depth knowledge of a major field of study −Broad understanding of the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the arts 

  • Skills in communication and in critical thinking −Global perspectives gained through intellectual and social exchange of its academics and staff through professional and study programs −Responsible citizenship and understanding of ethical norms. 

 

TSU follows modern European system of education and quality assurance: The University has been part of the Bologna process since 2005 and shares the principles of the EUA. This also implies building quality assurance and expert evaluations. The quality of study programs is assured by the evaluation processes including internal assessment, external review, international participation and cooperation. The European University Association named Tbilisi State University as an outstanding reformer in 2006.
TSU is an active member of prestigious international networks: European University Association (EUA), Black Sea University Network (BSU) and AgenceUniversitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). TSU has close scientific and educational contacts with over hundred universities and research centres of the world.
